Summary: |
Audio technology installation & upgrades at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, a small-to-medium-sized church in the Salt Lake City area
|
Project Narrative: |
This client church was founded in the late 1800s, with the current building constructed in the mid 1900s. The existing sanctuary sound system was installed in probably the 1970s or 1980s; the main speaker system was visually distracting and used outdated technology, so the sound was not great for the space.
We upgraded the sound system (including the soundboard, main speakers, and some microphones) to reduce visual interference, improve the spread of sound throughout the sanctuary, and future-proof the client for possible integration of contemporary instruments into the main speaker & recording system. |
Work Details: |
– Added new wireless lavalier microphones for the pastor and the assisting minister.
– Investigated and resolved issues with the existing sound equipment and cabling, including static and AM radio interference. – Replaced large hanging microphones with modern, unobtrusive microphones to capture and record the pipe organ and choir. The old microphones used older technology that was not quite appropriate for this use, and were strung from wires that were visually distracting. – Installed a low-profile, mounted line array speaker system to replace the old (~70s) flown cluster system. This upgraded system projected sound levels throughout the sanctuary, and is much less visually distracting – to the point where some congregation members remarked, “I can hear everything, but where is it coming from?” – Upgraded the soundboard/mixer to accomodate new technology and with futureproofing in mind. – Put together a sanctuary lighting interior design plan, for future consideration to improve lighting (for both visuals and ambiance) in the sanctuary. |
